Many of you might have seen files with extension PSD wherein PSD stands for Photoshop Standard Document. These are basically image files and PSD is the default extension of Adobe Photoshop. You might have heard of image formats like JPG, PNG, BMP, EMF etc but PSD files are bit different from these image files. The main difference is that PSD files are of high quality and the image quality remains the same even after re-sizing the image wherein the quality of other image format gets affected.

The main drawback in here is that PSD files require Adobe Photoshop for editing (To open PSD Files you will require Adobe Photoshop). But Adobe CS license is very expensive and also installation of this software occupies a lot of space. So in order to access or edit the PSD files we will have to compromise on both price and disk space.
In this article I have written about tools or software which can be a good alternative for Adobe Photoshop and occupies less space.
Adobe Photoshop Alternative To Open PSD Files
Paint.NET is one of the most loved photo editing tools available online which is available for free. This tool also has certain features which is similar to Photoshop so we can do a lot of task with this wonderful tool.
One can’t open PSD files with default Paint.NET instead it requires a PSD Plugin. So after installing Paint.NET you will need to install the PSD Plugin too.
Step 1: Install Paint.NET
Step 2: Unzip the PSD Plugin and copy the Photoshop.dll file
Step 3: Go to C:\Program Files\Paint.NET\FileTypes and paste the Photoshop.dll file in “FileTypes” Folder.
That’s all now you will be able to open and edit a PSD file.
GIMP (The GNU Image Manipulation Program)
GIMP is almost similar to Paint.NET with features like photo retouching, image creation etc. It is almost closest to Adobe Photoshop but its available for free. GIMP does not require any additional Plugin and one can directly open PSD files with ease.
XnView supports a huge number of image formats along with PSD format. This tool has an option to edit each layer of a PSD file and also saves the output in same PSD format (But single layer). Apart from this it has all the basic features of an image editing tool. It is available for free.
